Helmuth Koinigg was an Austrian racing driver who competed in Formula One in the 1970s. He was born on November 3, 1948 in Vienna, Austria. Koinigg made his Formula One debut in 1974 with the Surtees team at the age of 25. He scored his first and only World Championship point in his debut race at the United States Grand Prix held in Watkins Glen.
Tragically, Koinigg was killed in a racing accident during the 1974 United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen. On lap 10 of the race, his car suffered a suspension failure and he crashed into the barriers at high speed, resulting in his untimely death.
Koinigg's death led to renewed focus on safety in Formula One, with changes being made to improve the safety standards of the sport. He is remembered as a talented and promising young driver whose career was cut short far too soon.
